How Primary Drying Works

I find it interesting that after nearly four years I feel it necessary to once again return to a topic that I considered on the very first INSIGHT Vol. 1 No. 1 where I addressed the misconceptions regarding the role of the condenser in the lyophilization process. The reason for returning to the subject is because I still find that the misconception persists in many of those involved in the lyophilization or freeze-drying process. But this INSIGHT will deal mainly with how the primary drying process works or shall we say what is the true driving force behind the process.

There are several ways in which we could approach this topic and no doubt all of them would describe the process. However, the one that I think would be most applicable is to allow our friends at Surecure to take up the subject in their own very unique style as they have demonstrated so many times in the past and since we were first introduced to them in INSIGHT Vol. 2 No. 3. Just knowing the source of their raw material, you can well expect a slip or two.
