Tales of the Research and Development Freeze-Dryer
The Holiday Season is a time of tales and stories. Some tales may be true while others we could only wish for at this time. So that is the reason why I thought it appropriate to tell you my own set of tales relating to the research and development (R/D) dryer. An R/D dryer for the purposes of this INSIGHT will be any freeze-dryer having a shelf area of 24 ft2 (2.23 m2 ) or less. These tales take place over a period of decades and they are presented in no chronological order. The objective of these tales is to share with you my own experiences, successes and failures in using this type of equipment in the hopes that it might help others. But perhaps more important is that this issue begins Volume 5 and it is perhaps my way of saying thank you for your many comments over the years and if you have benefited from these INSIGHTs in any small way then I will have considered the effort of these past four years to be worthwhile and will continue with yet another volume.
It has often been the case that I have used the INSIGHT to address issues relating to the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries. While this issue will also pertain to these industries, those working in other fields such as diagnostics, foods, flowers and chemicals will often use a R/D freeze-dryer prior to going into full production. So the tales that I am about to share with you will have wide application and be applicable to all those who are currently or perhaps plan in the future to use this type of dryer. If you have attended one of my workshops or seminars and have heard one or more of these tales before then this INSIGHT should serve to refresh your memory. So let us begin, and what better place than at the very beginning.
