Narration on the American Conference on Lyophilization 2001

By

Thomas A. Jennings, Ph.D.

The following is an account of what transpired during the American Conference on Lyophilization 2001 that was conducted on March 10,11 and 17, 2001 in  Barquisimeto, Estado Lara, Venezuela. The conference was sponsored by Planesco C.A. and organized by Mr. Carlos D. Quintero A. who served as Conference Chairman. We, who attendend this Conference, are all indebted to Mr. Quintero and his staff for all the efforts that they made to make this event so successful. One had to be impressed with the warm climate that greeted you when you step off the plane. But you soon learned that true of warmth of Venezuela lies not in the warm days and cool nights but in the affection one received from the people that you met. While I learned that there are, depending on whether it is high or low tide, at least 701 islands in the Philippines, one could not help notice the countless number of beautiful Venezuelan women that one saw as they traveled about the country. It certainly explained why so often Venezuelan women rank so high in contests held throughout the world. Let me now share  with you (a), what I consider some of the best technical presentations; (b), an insight as to the general needs of developing countries to use lyophilization to take advantage of their natural resources; (c), a glimpse of some of the attendees to the conference and (d), a surprising conclusion to the conference, i.e., the formation of the International Society of Lyophilization-Freeze Drying.
