Other Applications of Freeze-Drying

by

Thomas A. Jennings, Ph.D.

With the exception of one INSIGHT (see Volume 4 No. 4),  the previous INSIGHTs mainly addressed issues related to the lyophilization or freeze-drying associated with the health care industry. Given the extensive use of lyophilization in the health care industry, such an emphasis should come as no great surprise. One only has to take a look at the membership list of the International Society of Lyophilization - Freeze Drying (ISL-FD) to see that the vast majority expressed interest in the fields of  biologicals, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. However, we should not lose sight over the fact that lyophilization does have applications in other fields such as chemicals and reagents, flowers, food, restoration of valuable documents and taxidermy. It is therefore the intent of this INSIGHT to make the reader aware of other applications that become possible though the use of  lyophilization or freeze-drying technology. The INSIGHT merely provides examples and is not in anyway considered to be a comprehensive study.
