STEAM STERILIZATION OF FREEZE-DRYERS. DEAD LEGS

Abstract

An analysis of the heat transfer in the so-called dead legs of the freeze-dryers, during saturated steam sterilization, is realized. The inside temperature of these parts of the freeze-dryers can be significantly different from the internal wall temperature of the dryer and time dependent. The most important factors, which influence the internal wall surface temperatures, are discussed. In order to ensure complete sterilization, the steam temperature in the dead leg must be higher than 121 ^oC.
