Getting A Handle on the Freeze-Dryer Door

By

Thomas A. Jennings, Ph.D.

ABSTRACT: If there is one thing that is common with all freeze-dryers, it is that they all have at least one door. The door serves a simple function, namely a means for loading and un-loading product into the drying chamber. Because of the simplicity of its function, little attention has been given to the impact that the door can have on the operation of the equipment,  the lyophilization process or the facilities. This issue of INSIGHT will attempt to get a handle on the freeze-dryer door. In this issue of INSIGHT this author deviates from his previous writing style  by  using  a  narrative account of a novice’s  first visit to a facility involved in the manufacture of a sterile lyophilized product as a means pointing out the impact of the freeze-dryer door. It is hoped that the reader will enjoy this change of pace for a technical publication and the author would appreciate  knowing your comments.
