INSIGHT - Comments Vol. 2 No. 12 The Future of Lyophilization The following are comments sent in by some of our readers. I wish to thank them for taking the time and effort to share their thoughts with us.
Many thanks Thomas. Ernesto Arbizu - December 1999
Dear Thomas, First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you very much for all this information on freeze drying. Before reading your Insight I didn't know anything about this science. I hope this edition is not the last one of this century and that next year you will still publish some new editions (the next century starts on the 01.01.2001 and not on the 01.01.2000). Best Regards, Christophe - December 1999
REPLY BY TAJ: I stand corrected! Yes, we will publish the INSIGHT this coming year and I am surprised that the Novice did not pick up on this error.
Dear Dr. Jennings: The last week I got my degree on Chemical Engineering, after 13 years I finished my studies in the University. This degree was long awaited and finally it came. But one of the most important issue on this success is that 14 other people, and myself built a lyophilizer and gave it to the University as a donation. On March this year, we began the search of information over the Internet and found your site with very useful information for us about the process, equipment, etc. This encourages us to make a follow up of the previous Insights and our knowledge of the process grew and got stronger than ever. We were divided into seven teams, working with simulation of the process, design & construction and studies of the parameters to freeze dry fruits as orange, bananas, passion fruit, blackberries and guava. Our work has been well received by the University and they believe that it will be the core of a microbiology laboratory in order to advise industries in how to treat effluents or test process to dry shrimp and so on. You really don't know how much we learned and how we used the information to correct our equipment, tests, procedures, etc. Finally, after hours and hours and hours of process, we realized that the success was reached. We have talked about your help and have you as our remote and unknown teacher and master. This is a tribute that maybe you never expected and I was thinking to let you know the value added information that we gathered on your site on the Internet. Thank you Dr. Jennings for sharing your knowledge. Dear Dr. Jennings: I definitely believe that INSIGHT provided a strong message that lyophilization is a science not an art. Your examples in different INSIGHT volumes served as real time examples, which I personally liked for the fact that they more than likely came from your experience working with different mind set of people. I hope that there will be an increased participation and encouragement on this publication as we move to the next century. I really appreciate your time and effort to make this internet publication a success. Sincerely, Manohar Katakam, Ph.D. - December 1999 Centeon, USA
Dear Tom, I was in great difficulty when I found INSIGHTs in your web site. I had no scientific knowledge about lyophilization nor freeze drying. There is an expression in my language that means "To fish in troubled waters". That was my case at the beginning of my work with freeze dryer. I had done several trials but all of them were "art, not science". Now, I have scientific knowledge about lyophilization and convert my trials from art to science. I am thankful to you that you light our way in lyophilization by writing INSIGHTs. Please continue to help us converting our work from art to science by your lovely style writings of INSIGHT. I wish a happy new age to all people in this world. Hilal Haznedaroglu - December 1999 Cekmece Nuklear Research and Training Center Istanbul/TURKEY
Respected Sir, I must congratulate and thank you for your Insight on Freeze Drying which is very very useful to me and my company too. We are finalizing our technical committee report on the purchase of a lyophiliser with a 200 Kg ice condensing capacity with 9 sq. meter chamber area. Though I have used small lyophilizer of 20 Kg capacity of VirTis, your Insight has cleared my understanding on how to look in to various features of different manufacturers. We have received almost 8 tenders from Hull, Martin Christ, Terruzi, Telstar, Usifried, Lyovac, FTS/Kinetic and one Indian Make S.S.Stainless etc. It is very difficult to decide which is good for our application for freeze drying of proteins. However your articles have made it easier. The article on Stoppering is extremely good and informative. First time my concept on stoppering are cleared. The feature of Lyophilisation is in depth. Validation is very important now a days and your style of explaining in story is really good and needs more attention. I have a lot to say which I may express after I understand more. With good wishes for showing the art of freeze drying should be transformed/reformed into science in coming millennium. Wish You a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2000. With Best Regards Dr. Sumant S Karnik - December 1999 HBPCL
.Dear Tom Jennings Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year! Yvette - December 1999
Dear Mr. Jennings, As far as I know the new century only starts next year. Nevertheless I want to thank you for your interesting Insight articles. These articles are always a moment of contemplation in these rushing production times. Production people's minds are most of the time only focussed on producing itself and it's good that once in a while there's somebody who says 'Hey, consider what your doing, evaluate the process your using, re-think what you know about freeze drying...' Thank you, keep on going. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your staff. Bert Van Meervenne - December 1999 REPLY BY TAJ: I stand corrected again! I can see that I do need to have a talk with the Novice. |
